In March 1998 I went to work as the Information Technology Manager
for a medical equipment manufacturer. This was my introduction to
Solomon (now called Microsoft Dynamics SL). I immediately
recognized the power locked away in the software but also
recognized the challenges the company had been dealing with since
implementation. Upper management wanted to replace the system. But
I knew that this 'diamond in the rough' could be made to meet our
needs for a fraction of the cost of buying and implementing an
entirely new system.
Our reseller was of little assistance: slow to respond,
technically inept, clueless to our needs, and more interested in
selling us new products and billable hours than solving our
problems. Over the course of the next year I learned everything I
could about the system while fixing, tweaking, and customizing it
to truly meet our needs. At the end of that year, rather than
wanting to replace the system, our parent company decided to
implement Solomon in a new acquisition! In 2000,
I decided to take my new found skills and enter the world of
software consulting. I went to work for, at the time, world's largest
reseller of mid-market accounting software as a
Senior Consultant. Here I found many of the same problems
I encountered as an end-user: slow response, over-promising
of sales people, disregard for user needs, and a focus on selling
products, services and billable hours.
I left in 2002 to work for a smaller
reseller. I believed that a small business could
better focus on customer needs without getting bogged down into
corporate politics and a myopic focus on the bottom-line. What I
found instead was once again many of the same problems I had
suffered as an end-user and had witnessed behind the scenes at a large consulting organization.
This was when I decided to create a new kind of resource for
businesses using Microsoft Dynamics. A resource that:
